Facts That You Must Know About Off-Road Tires

Driving off-road is much different from driving on the road. Your tires have to experience a roughness that is absent while driving on the roads. There are different types of off-road tires and you have to choose a set that is most suitable for your car. For this you have to take certain points into consideration.

The first thing that you have to think about is whether you want to go for tires that are tall or if you would like to go for tires that are wide. If you want a greater clearance under the chassis and the differential you should opt for a tall tire. A tire that is wide gives you a variance in the tread pattern and consequently a greater traction. Usually tires that are 35 inches are used for trucks as the other four wheelers go for a smaller size than this. If it is mandatory for you to use a tire that is 31 inches on the rig then you've got no other option but to lift the four-wheeler to do that. But lifting the vehicle is not a simple procedure. There are certain laws governing the procedure and they differ from one state to the other.

Accommodating large sized tires requires re-gearing the back and front ends of your vehicle. While the vehicle is being lifted to fix the tires, you should be careful to see to it that it does not topple over because its centre of gravity gets displaced from its stable configuration. It is also advisable that you lower the pressure of your off-road tires when you are taking it out on a trial. This will give your vehicle a greater traction. However, there is one disadvantage in dropping the pressure of the tires because in such a case you cannot test your vehicle at high speeds. If you tend to higher the speed despite the low pressure you will see that the performance of your four-wheeled large vehicle is going to come down drastically.

Another effect of lowering the pressure in the tires is that the effective diameter of the tire gets reduced and this reduces the ground clearance by significant number of inches. This in turn brings down the gear ratio making the lateral walls of the tires susceptible to damage. But it has been observed that if you want to enhance the off-road performance of your four-wheeled vehicle, you should lower the pressure on the tires. It is a very convenient process and a cheap way to increase the performance of your vehicle when it is running off-road.

Many new off road tires come with certain specifications; you should read them carefully and follow them strictly. Otherwise the performance of your vehicle suffers.
